About Us

The Blockchain Association (BA) is the unified voice of the digital asset industry in Washington, DC. We are the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a pro-innovation policy environment for the digital asset economy. Our members include the industry’s top companies, investors, and software developers working together to educate policymakers about blockchain technology and its ability to pave the way for a more secure, competitive, and consumer-friendly digital marketplace. Our mission is to forge consensus on key policy solutions among regulators, lawmakers, and the public so that the digital asset economy can flourish in the United States.

Role and Responsibilities

We are hiring one full-time Policy Counsel. The Policy Counsel will have a unique opportunity to work on novel, complex, and exciting issues at the bleeding edge of digital asset law and policy. The Policy Counsel will play a critical role in crafting and executing BA’s policy strategy.

As Policy Counsel, you will:

  • Develop and advocate for policy positions on a broad range of issues related to the digital asset industry, including mining, staking, trading, custody, privacy, decentralized finance, stablecoins, non-fungible tokens, DAOs, gaming, and more
  • Manage long-term writing projects, including research and drafting for legal thought pieces, articles, and op-eds related to key policy and legal initiatives
  • Conduct legal research and draft memoranda, briefing materials, policy reports, comment letters, legislation, and litigation materials
  • Build relationships and consensus with a broad coalition of grassroots, state, national, and international organizations, public officials, and community leaders
  • Track and analyze new legislation, case law, guidance, and rulemaking
  • Work with BA members to build consensus on policy positions and provide analysis
  • Speak to public audiences about our policy positions, such as on panels and podcasts

The Policy Counsel will work out of our Washington, DC office, with remote work as appropriate. Although advocacy is an important element of our work, this is not a lobbying role, so the Policy Counsel will not be expected to register as a federal lobbyist.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must have:

  • A JD from an ABA-accredited law school and an active US law license in good standing
  • At least one year of relevant practical experience at a law firm or in-house
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of digital assets and blockchain technology
  • Experience with administrative law, regulatory compliance, enforcement defense, trial or appellate litigation, constitutional law, or US federal legislative process
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and verbal communication skills, particularly the ability to distill complex concepts into simple terms and explain them to a public audience
  • Outstanding attention to detail, legal project management, and organizational skills
  • The self-motivation and drive to take ownership of projects and operate with autonomy
  • The ability to succeed as a team player in a dynamic, fast-paced, creative environment
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, a sense of curiosity, and a high degree of professionalism

We also prefer if you have:

  • Strong understanding of US financial regulation and relevant legal frameworks, such as the federal securities, commodities, anti-money laundering, banking, or tax laws
  • A record of academic excellence, including membership on a law review
  • A record of success in trial or appellate advocacy, including mock trial or moot court
  • Experience using digital assets and other blockchain technology, such as DeFi and Web3
